Ultimate bearing capacity for steel sandwich panels under uniaxial compression

  •   Objectives  In order to realize lightweight design of hull structure, the steel sandwich structure is used to replace the traditional stiffened structure to reduce the weight of hull structure on the premise of guaranteeing the load-bearing capacity of the original structure.
      Methods  In view of the load-bearing capacity of type V and type I steel corrugated sandwich panels under uniaxial compression, the buckling analysis and nonlinear finite element analysis were carried out by using ABAQUS, and the load-bearing capacity and failure modes of steel sandwich panels were compared with those of traditional stiffened panels.
      Results  The load-bearing capacity and failure modes of steel sandwich panels were obtained. The results show that the buckling failure modes of steel sandwich panels are different because of different structure types. Under the same weight, the designed type I steel corrugated sandwich panel has the highest bearing capacity, followed by stiffened panel and type V steel corrugated sandwich panel.
      Conclusions  The lightweight efficiency is different for different structural types, the lightweight law of the steel corrugated sandwich panel can provide reference for the selection and application of similar panels in hull structure design.
