Finite element analysis of the failure mode of composite sandwich cylinders subjected to hydrostatic pressure

  • This paper investigates the failure mode of composite sandwich cylinders subjected to hydrostatic pressure based on ABAQUS software. Firstly, an effective and accurate simulation method is presented using the material and element library of ABAQUS software. Then, separated strength failure criteria for the outer and core material are built referring to TSAIW, Hashin theories, and the fourth strength theory. Finally, influencing factors such as L/R, t/h, t1/t2 and layup angles are analyzed, and the specific effects they exert on cylinders' failure mode are obtained, thus providing the foundation for the optimal design of composite sandwich cylinders.
