Performance Analysis of a Novel Marine Honeycomb Vibration Isolator

  • Honeycomb structures are well-known for their unique in-plane loading characteristics on vibration reduction and shock absorption. In this paper, two types of composite hexagonal honeycomb vibration isolators with positive and negative macro Poisson's ratios are designed respectively. The proposed isolators can also serve as mountings in certain applications. To investigate their actual properties, the finite element models for these honeycomb isolation systems are established, and their vibration reduction capabilities are demonstrated through both modal analysis and frequency response analysis. The results reveal a 17 dB difference in the vibration level when using the proposed isolators in the lower frequency domain from 1~50 Hz. Meanwhile, comparative studies are conducted for the isolators with either composite material panels or steel panels, and better mechanical performance on resonance restrain is observed for the former ones.
