Energy-Absorbing Analysis of Typical Structural Elements on a Collided Ship Broadside

  • In order to research the shear failure mechanism of beam with high web plates and enhance understanding on the absorbing energy in the ship collision, the structure of a beam with band plates was chosen as example to study the typical structural elements from broadside on oil tanker.Utilizing the ultimate equilibrium theory and LS-DYNA software, the energy absorting mechanism of the beam due to collsion was analyzed, with attention p articularly to the effect of plastic hinging charateristics of beam with band plates and different type of finite elements and grid sizes on the impact loading and energy-absorbing,as well as the different ratio of ben ding and membrane strain energy accounting for the total absorbing energy. The results indicate that the element size and the ultimate plastic strain may affect the maximum deflection and energy absortion remarkably, and also the bending strain energy and membrane strain energy is comparative in the failure of the beam with band plates.
